The trick is to raise the bar just enough that it'll take a determined attacker a few days to defeat whatever protection is in your game. There are often enough people out there who will go and buy a popular game if a crack isn't immediately available on release date to make it worth doing. I've seen quite a few case studies where popular games have made enough additional profit to justify the cost of the extra security by not being cracked within the first few days.

If you find one of your games is being heavily targetted, sure, go with a professional option, but otherwise your efforts will be inefficient or undervalued.
